About Activist Explorer
Activist Explorer is a quest to collect, create, cultivate, and connect our activist stories. The goal is to foster deeper understanding and fairer representation of our wildly diverse global community of boat-rockers, city-hall-fighters, neck-sticker-outers, dreamers, experimenters, revolutionaries, and gadflies working for a just world…aka activists.
I write essays about activist culture and review fiction featuring activists. I also write fiction featuring activists, starting with my “movement mystery” novel Rainwood House Sings.
I offer three participatory workshops that connect activist culture and movement-building to imaginative writing, aka fiction:
- Fiction Featuring Activists: examining a range of fiction to understand activist representation
- Stories Of Our Power (SOOP): tossing activist anecdotes into the SOOP port as ingredients for creating movement-building stories
- Neighborhood Novelists: collective novel-writing for young people
About Juliana
Juliana Barnet is a lifelong activist, popular educator, and anthropologist. Many years immersed in the ups and downs of popular (and unpopular) movements inspired her to delve into the nature of activist culture. An avid fiction reader, frustrated by so few activist characters in novels and movies, Juliana writes, and encourages others to write, stories centering the adventures of activists.
She also writes essays on activist culture and reviews of activist portrayals in fiction. She works with writers and activists young and old on integrating creative writing into movement building.
Juliana is connected to many fine communities of activist trouble-makers.
